The Sun Myth

The Sun Myth

In some countries, places where the Sun plays an active part in every-day life, nobody is worrying about heating bills. But here in the UK, where the Sun is as mythical as the Yeti (some might even say more mythical, since there are probably more Yeti sightings every year than there are occasions where the Sun comes out) it’s sometimes difficult to think about anything else. And what about if you have a little one you need to take the best care in the world of? There’s no choice: you need to keep the little one nice and warm and so cranking up the heating is the only option.

Read about someone who has a little one here, and their opinion on this.

So, with that taken in to consideration, it’s no wonder that our energy costs are going quite literally through the roof. But really, what can we do about it?

The answer, on the surface, appears to be “not much”, but is that entirely true? Or are we missing the picture?

In fact, there are ways, as with anything, to keep heat in. I recently watched a documentary about a man in the United States who had made it his life’s work to build houses (for very little cost) out of sustainable things: stuff like car tires, bottles and other rubbish. Now, this may seem like a daft way to build a house, but the reality is anything but. In fact, some of these houses are so efficient that they don’t even require additional heating. Now, isn’t that something to think about?

Obviously it’s quite clear that we’re a long way off being able to do this in most cities. There are just too many laws restricting us. But who knows, maybe in time it will happen? And wouldn’t that be a fantastic compromise?
