Checkmate

The life of a costumier is a life full of fantasy and imagination where you can get lost in a world that devoid of logicality – isn’t that great?! Sometimes a detailed brief is given, designing and creating a costume to reflect a particular period of time for example or a costume that needs to reflect a characters personality or occupation. Impeccable research will form the creation of every little detail from the size and colour of buttons to the type of thread used to sew a seam, everyday is a learning curve! However the most exciting briefs are where ones imagination can run free and inspiration can come from the most unlikely of sources. A costumier must harness the ability to see the world from a different point, through a different set of eyes. Mundane daily tasks, chance encounters, window displays or even the shape of a drinks bottle all hold potential for inspiration for those of a creative mind. One of the most amazing outfits I have ever seen had taken muse from watching a couple of older gentlemen playing a game of chess in a local park. The chequered squares were pieced together to form the most wonderful looking dress imaginable, completely striking in how it fitted the body with a pattern that seemed to imitate a magic eye puzzle when looked at long enough. Who would have thought that chess sets could stimulate such a truly captivating creation! Next time you see a truly fabulous outfit why not try to see it through a different set of eyes, you never know what you might find!
