Checkmate

The life of a costumier is a life full of fantasy and imagination where you can get lost in a world that devoid of logicality – isn’t that great?! Sometimes a detailed brief is given, designing and creating a costume to reflect a particular period of time for example or a costume that needs to reflect a characters personality or occupation. Impeccable research will form the creation of every little detail from the size and colour of buttons to the More

Be inspired!

I’m often asked what inspired me to get into the fashion and costume business and, unlike a lot of people who have no idea how they fell into their chosen profession, I can remember exactly where and when my inspiration came from.

I think there’s something in my families genes that makes us all creative, even though my brother has gone down a completely different route, helping to create new environmental technology for a company called Enigin. Myself, I used More

Why Old Houses Are The Best Houses

Funnily enough, this morning I found myself reading the following blog post:
http://www.eniginblog.com/2010/07/30/how-to-let-people-know-about-enigins-energy/
I say “funnily enough” because if you’d never seen the TV before and you decided to switch an English TV set on, say, any time during the day, you’d be forced to assume that the only thing worthy of TV coverage was houses, developing houses, and renovating houses which had already been developed. Oh, and Sarah Beanie, of course. As mentioned in the above article, moving into More

Don't Be Scared Of Blogs

Despite the fact that almost ever person down my street is blogging (including Mrs Winkleroy at number 53 who does a sort of elderly fashion blog that attracts as many as ten visitors per week, bless her) there are still a lot of people who have no idea where to begin. That’s not all. There are also people who are terrified of the idea of blogging…the same kind of people who believe that they have to stand in one place More

Energy saving tips for Winter and Summer

Did you know there are lots of ways to save energy and money in both summer and winter? Enigin gives some excellent tips here. Such simple tips as draft proofing windows in winter and checking air conditioners in the Summer are a few of the great and easy tips on offer.

One would think some of these tips are basic when one reads them. However, it’s surprising just how many of us don’t actually act on them. Actions such More

Giving Knowledge

From the moment you are born, money is an issue. It’s there whether we like it or not, and there’s really no getting away from it. First it’s an issue for your parents, who have to buy you all the latest fashionable baby things in order for you not to look pathetic and embarrassing and unfashionable when in the company of those oh-so-fashionable babies, then, after the landslide of puberty has finished wreaking havoc and ruining any self-esteem you had More

Are you interested in Fashion?

If you are interested in fashion and design there are many ways you can get involved. You can go and take classes in sewing and sketching patterns. You can also attend art colleges for a full degree in fashion design. If you already know how to sew and you don’t want to attend classes you could start designing your own clothes. You could try to sell them to boutique shops locally or sell them online. Fashion is a great outlet More

The Sun Myth

In some countries, places where the Sun plays an active part in every-day life, nobody is worrying about heating bills. But here in the UK, where the Sun is as mythical as the Yeti (some might even say more mythical, since there are probably more Yeti sightings every year than there are occasions where the Sun comes out) it’s sometimes difficult to think about anything else. And what about if you have a little one you need to take More

Baby Stitch Up!

The life of a Costumier is not one to be taken lightly. By that I mean that it is long hours and an insane amount of hard work, so fitting in writing a blog at least once a week will be rather difficult. But I am going to try my best. So hmmm…what can I tell you about me? My absolute favourite time in fashion was anywhere between 1920 and 1950, I wish that someone would bring those thirty years back. I think it’s because I love the thought of ladies having gloves, I think it is rather sweet. Anyway if you are interested in rather meaningless thoughts like that than you will most likely enjoy what it is I plan to write here. So welcome to my blog and I promise to try not to talk about work too much. But first a big thank you to my wonderful design friend (John, this means you) who designed a fantastic page for me to write my ramblings down on. I really do appreciate it!
